Hello, All: A rather lively and interesting discussion started at a
workshop I attended a couple of weeks ago given by Marie Biancuzzo. I
didn't think there was another LC out there who thought like I did, that
finger feeding (I feel the more correct term is "finger manipulating") has
the potential to do more harm than good until Marie said she agrees
wholeheartedly with me. We really need to be very cognizant of what we are
doing when we go into a baby's mouth. I find that if I feel a baby's oral
space needs to be "invaded" I will immediately refer that baby to a
therapist who has the training that I do not to correctly evaluate and
prescribe treatments to help correct whatever is going on in the baby's
mouth. I strongly feel that "suck training" is beyond my scope of practice
as a nurse and is certainly beyond the scope of a lay practitioner. For
those of you who are intrigued by this line of thought, please attend some
of the oral-motor workshops that are out there or arrange to spend some
time with a therapist. I always learn so much when I co-consult with our
therapists.
Just my 2 cents.
