I have been working with a mom for about 7 weeks now. The baby had a short
frenulum at birth. It was not directly at the tip so the baby could stretch
his tongue enough to latch. One side/nipple was better then the other. His
weight was fine but the nipple pain increased. Her ducts were getting clogged
and it was becoming a frustrating experience.

I had suggested a few times to have it clipped. This week she was finally
comfortable to do this procedure. We also went to a 2nd LC to confirm my
findings. I went with her to the oral surgeon. He was did not seem to mind
that I was present.

The procedure was VERY quick. The amount that was cut was only about 1
millimeter. The doctor wanted to know if the baby would take a bottle now!!!
The mom said, "No." We (mom and I) went into a recovery room together. The
baby latched immediately. His lips were in the perfect position. His tongue
was great! She said she felt 100% better!!!!
She was amazed by the difference. He fell back to sleep and seemed fine on the
way home.

The doctor said he was surprised by lactation consultants referring babies so
young to do this "just" for breastfeeding. He said many children are not
"caught" with problems until they start having speech difficulties. He said
that he never gets any feedback if it helped or not. He even "warned" the mom
that it might not solve her breastfeeding problems (Mr. Positive!).

It was a WONDERFUL experience to help this mom through this!
