Good morning all.

As you all probably have heard somewhere along the line, I started Lactnet
with Kathleen Auerbach's assistance (she was the head of the JHL at the
time, and I wrote in about my ideas to start a list like this. She was very
enthusiastic and so...the rest is history). : )

As a quick note ...I have decided to shut down my LC practice today ..
Taking my name off the local hospital lists, no longer renting pumps . This
also involves stepping down as listmother of Lactnet, although I will be a
member and hanging around. The list will now be in the loving and capable
hands of the team who has been managing it with me, for years... and will
be owned by Rachel Myr and Kathy Koch, two of the finest, most generous,
and most capable LCs and women I know.

I am stopping LC work not because I am burned out .. In fact there is still
so much I don't know ... I hope to still continue learning and teaching,
here on the list.. I also have a lot of other interests that have taken a
back seat... I have a whole bunch of books I want to read ..may be that
stack by my bed will be getting a little smaller these days. : ) I have a
grandson who is 4 months old, the light of our lives, and family nearby
now, and a wonderful husband, a wedding for our middle daughter next
Satuday, (dear Martha), and I am going to work on learning to weave
competently, a daunting task.

I have mothered the list for many years, and I have not been as good a
listmom as this list and you all deserve because I have had to deal with
RA, and back pain and arthritis for the past 10 years. LC work is very
physical, and I must stop because of too high risk of back injuries... I
recently had a second annular lumbar tear and the pain involved and limited
activity for long periods of time.... The healing time and length of time
it takes to get back on my feet...Has been too hard and to risk doing it
again with my lovely work. ... Ah well... You know how hard it is for me.

I will miss the moms and babies but missing you, my colleagues, is perhaps
The most painful thing and my hardest thing to let go of. I am leaving
while still on my A game I hope ha ha😀 and I'm looking forward to new
things playing with my grandson, and being with my family... Helping them
as much as I can to learn to be good parents if they choose that route, and
being proud of the wonderful people they are ...and watching them thrive.
I just wanted you to know and hear it from me. Lactnet will continue to
thrive under the capable tutelage of our listadmin team. I thank them so
much for being wiling to guide it and be there for you all, and for helping
me all these years. I thank Kathleen Auerbach for helping me to get Lactnet
to be a reality.

The real goal is and always has been to help mothers parent by
breastfeeding comfortably, and with as much pleasure and confidence as
possible. The science of lactation and the techniques used to help moms
and babies change sometimes, but sometimes the basics really need to be
emphasized, and by going back to basic technique, and being a cheerleader
for mothers, we can give them the confidence to breastfeed and to bond with
their child...money in the bank, psychologically and health wise, that they
can draw upon for the rest of their lives. You, my colleagues, are the
hands and the hearts that help, whether as a MD, an RN, an IBCLC, a
consultant or counselor or peer counselor or dietician or MSW, or OT... we
all can help support mothers and babies. Babies are the future of our
world, and we need to have them safe, sound, and loved so that they may go
forward and maybe fix some of the issues that need fixing in this world,
secure in themselves due to good parenting, that began with breastfeeding.

I will not say good bye. I will say be well, do good work, and take care of
yourselves. Life is short. Enjoy the small things, and I am still around,
and will be listening.

Love from Vermont,

Kathleen, Listmother handing over the reins...and wondering what the proper
latin term is!! : ) HA. LOVE YOU ALL.XOXO

I've been helping mothers bf since 1986... And I have loved every minute of
it 😀

Love to all .. Be well and keep in touch
Kathleen
