We had a Mom at our LLL meeting recount the following yesterday. She has a
2 month old who was 3 weeks premie and had surgery due to a bowel
obstruction on day of life. She returned for a checkup to the surgeon with
her huge and healthy BF 2 month old. After commenting that he would never
have recognized the infant as the same baby, because he looked so healthy,
the surgeon then launched into an attack on the family's co sleeping
habits, telling Mom that most SIDS deaths are caused by suffocation with
the maternal breast; the child would be in her bed as a teenager; and he
would have lots of ear infections. He also asked how soon the baby would be
starting solids.
I still can't believe powerful influential neonatal surgeons have the gall
to spout this kind of undocumented garbage to very vulnerable people. Mom
plans to send him articles....
