Pat, and everyone else,

What a tough situation you've been put in! First, new parents probably
do not *expect* gifts. Second, I would come armed with lots and lots and
lots of information and statistics. Find the studies on how gift packs
actually discourage breastfeeding. Then do some calculations as to what
it would cost the hospital in increased services if children are ABM fed.
Include the post-partum period (1st 48 hours) with nurse time, then cost
of increased illnesses, etc. Why not include some information on how
breastfeeding reduces the risk of domestic violence and child abuse.
That must cost the hospital a bundle.

After presenting all the reasons not to give out packs, suggest you make
up your own packs. Maybe include a water bottle with the hospital (not
other company) logo on it, or an X-LG t-shirt with the same logo. How
about some information for new parents, care of the newborn, how to make
sure baby is getting enough, positioning, latch-on, sore nipples, pumping
and milk storage guidelines, telephone #s of LCs, support groups, pump
rental stations, etc.

Make all of this into a nice, glitzy presentation. Other companies have
done the same, why not us?????

Wishing you strength and courage on your journey to the board room.

Sincerely,

Johanna Berger, LSW
