Irving news pulls breastfeeding cover, fires editor
http://nb.cbc.ca/regional/servlet/View?filename=nb_breastpaper11102005
Oct 11 2005
CBC News

(I went to the newspaper website http://herenb.ca/

I checked out the forums (Saint John's forum had the most discussion), and
learnt a bit more. It seems that probably the firing of the editor is
unrelated. It seems that the higher-ups in the paper, did approve the
original cover, but when it hit the stands, some distributors and/or
advertisers complained (started calling the paper) and so they pulled the
paper, recalled the already distributed copies, and re-issued with the new
cover.

So if you are writing letters, you could complain to the owners for having
no backbone, and you could let the advertisers know that this kind of cover
is okay? (being careful not to attack any one advertiser - cause you
wouldn't really know which ones complained, and which were okay with it?) I
think they all just need to be reassured that the general audience, and in
particular the audience for *HERE*, are really okay with, and even support,
the original photo.)

The nursing mother whose photo was pulled from the cover of an Irving-owned
newspaper says outdated attitudes prevent many moms from giving their babies
the healthiest start possible.

I just heard from Gail Storr of New Brunswick (co-chair of the Breastfeeding
Committee for Canada) She writes:

In reality the incident did us a favour. I ended up with a waiting list
for a breastfeeding workshop I was doing that week jointly sponsored by the
New Brunswick Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the Saint John
Breastfeeding Alliance. Also I did four radio and TV spots and they all
emphasized the low breastfeeding rates in NB and what could be done to
change that more than the sensationalism of the cover being pulled so in the
end it was a good news day for breastfeeding in N.B.
