I do wear plastic/vinyl medical gloves (not latex) for almost the entire
consultation. My hands sweat inside of them so I wear them until I am sure I
won't be handling the baby or touching mom anymore. Then I wash my hands
after removing them (because they are sweaty). This is hot humid Houston.

I just feel better with knowing I am protecting mom and baby against my
germs on my hands. I am either at the mom's house or a WIC clinic and
sometimes the hand washing facilities are poor where ever I am.

Plus I feel that wearing gloves is a professional type thing -- to set me
apart from the lower skilled help they may have already recieved.

Our ethical standards say something about taking safety precautions.
Excellant hand washing could be enough, this is all most doctors do.
