Rachelle,

Yes, babies can nurse this way.  It is a position that can also be used
to help with OALD or tongues that don't want to come forward. Sometimes
referred to as the Australian hold.   An older baby usually has no
problem, a very young one may need a little help, but it should work out
OK.  My babies were never adverse to crawling up top and catching a snack
when I was too lazy to roll over while we were sacked out together.
