I had heard of this case, but it is compounded now re the hx of breast
reduction. This should not have been missed. Many moms do not know it is
a risk factor. I think I mentioned before on lactnet that in prenatal bf
class I ask what should you all be doing to prepare for bf? Someone
usually answers rubbing nipples with a towel.

I correct this and say these are the things you could be doing instead:
plan for an unmedicated birth, if possible
call our dept if concerns about nipples/breasts (eg inverted)
call our dept to discuss prev. surgeries/injuries/radiation to breasts
(this so they don't have to share this with the group)
read some good books (I show some books)
attend LLL meetings

If they do not come to a prenatal class, then when I meet them in L&D or
1st time on PP I ask about the birth, prev. bf expereicnes (not just how
many x did you bf a baby - some bf only 1 wk and that is significant),
medical conditions such as diabetes, etc, and prev.
surgeries/biopsies/injuries/trauma/radiation - have had surprises re
breast surgery, prev. cancer and radiation, etc not picked up. These you
will follow closely.
