Hi All,
Here in Sac I find that many of my clients (low income, welfare, etc.) are
offered and even talked into the depo shot right before leaving the hosp.
Most have many probs with milk supply, gee I wonder why, and give up and go
to ABM.
My personal feeling is that they are LOW INCOME, WELFARE Mom (Emphasis only)
and people are trying to keep them from having more babies. Now I ask you,
whose business is it if this mom continues to have more babies? Granted, I
know that the welfare system is strained, but does that give Hospitals and
Drs the right to impose this contraception on a mother who may not want it?
I know of one mom who was told if she diddn't accept the shot and sign the
papers, they would call CPS and have her baby taken away from her (She was 17
with baby #2). Luckily, she told them to go to Hell, that they couldn't
force her to do that and they couldn't take her baby! (Smart kid!)
I am afraid that many hosps think the only way to reduce the # of babies
coming into the world is to force the moms (even if it is subtle, gentle
force) to get this shot, since it lasts 3 months and is easier to guarantee
no babies for the first 3 months that way, than to hope that the mom will "be
responsible" and use contraception after 6 weeks. Unfortunately, what they
fail to realize is that when the Depo shot causes the mom to lose, or never
produce her milk, the baby MUST go on ABM and then the hosp/medical bills and
cost of public healthcare go up and up, and they have defeated the purpose of
trying to save money for public healthcare. If they would instead encourage
exclusive BF with these moms, and explain the benefits of natural
contraception thru exclusive BF, I think things would look up.
Just my .02.

Jay
