There has been a recent (local) surge in preparing and eating placenta. One
reason, for the reduction of postpartum depression, and the other reason for
increasing milk production.

I thought placenta was a major producer of progesterone (increases as the
function of the corpeus luteum drops off).

Is the placenta itself high in progesterone, or does it just cause the body
to create progesterone? I'm wondering, because if mothers are taking this
postpartum, wouldn't the progesterone inhibit, rather than increase, milk
production? Retention of placenta means low or no milk supply - again
because of progesterone production, but does the level of progesterone in
the placenta have a play in this?

A midwife friend told me that it was too bad I hadn't kept my last baby's
placenta, as I could use it for relief of peri-menopausal symptoms -
symptoms that seem to be very estrogen dominant (roundness, water retention,
memory loss, continued and heavy bleeding). Usually estrogen dominance would
be relieved by progesterone, which is what I would assume would be increased
by consuming placenta.

Thanks!

Sam Doak

Who usually knows this kind of thing. it's that memory loss - I'll blame it
on estrogen.

We're going to Candy Mountain, Charlie!
