Recently I have been approached by two families whose children are primarily nourished through breastmilk at 8 and 10 months. The parents had dutifully begun offering solids at 6 months and continue to do so - but their children take few solids, nurse on cue and continue to thrive. My own big, healthy babies were the same.

However, when I asked a pediatrician what she would expect an 8 month old to be ingesting in a 24 hour period, she said 3 "solid" meals, several snacks and 25 ounces of breastmilk or formula.

Why the discrepancy? Can anybody share thoughts or links to research on what a healthy baby consumes beyond 6 months?

Both of these families anticipate a separation of baby from Mom for a few days due to work travel. Until now they've been nursing on cue and are asking for guidance on how much breastmilk to have available for their children during the separation. I welcome your guidance!

Ellen
