I have been helping a mom who has a 9 month old. She has been exclusively
pumping for this baby from the beginning. No problems with supply, in fact
she has milk stored in the freezer. The baby never latched on and we don't
really know why but mom just resolved to stop the frustrating battle at
about one month and just pump. She is a great success happy healthy 9 month
old never a drop of formula and mom has milk to spare in the freezer.
Problem is mom is very tired of pumping. She is committed to pumping for 1
year. She would love to provide Moms milk to her baby for 2 years but just
doesn't think she can keep pumping this long. She came to me for help
getting the baby to learn to latch now, at 9 months. What do you guys think.
Do you think this is possible? What techniques to try? I saw her today and
when she is presented her moms breast all she does is pull at the nipple with
her hands. As if she is trying to grab it like a bottle. When mom pumps the
baby knows this is Milk she makes the sign for milk ( baby signs book). Any
suggestions are appreciated. I have told this mom about a patient I had who
resolved to just pump due to baby unable to latch. Then one night when the
power was out and mom was stumbling around the dark kitchen, holding the baby
in just the right place, devine intervention caused her nightgown to be open
in just the right place, and then wouldn't you know the hungry impatient baby
LATCHED ON SPONTANEOUSLY WITH NO HELP AT ALL in the dark!!!! So I know it
can happen, but 9 months? What to Do?
