My experience in the hospital for the first 24 hours also leaves me wondering what really is 'normal'. My training as an ER nurse kicks in and I have learned to do a complete assessment and help find out what is 'normal' for that mother/baby dyad. Of course, this doesn't work for everyone because we are held to standing orders and other agendas.
My advice is always: LOOK AT THE BABY. Is he peeing, pooping, looking around, how is the color, how is mom acting?
We tend to get comfortable with rules: 1 diaper the first day, 2 diapers the second....etc. instead of discerning what is appropriate for this dyad.
Then again, if IBCLC's were seen as professionals and colleagues we would have more of a say.....
