RE; Breast feeding and Pregnancy, I was fortunate enough to particpate in
some research of the late great Niles Newton. She collected data on mothers
who had nursed through pregnancy, Tandem nursed . Etc.
What she found was that by about the 5th month of pregnancy milk production
had pretty much stopped for most women. Placenta apparently was large enough
to suppress lactation by this point.
Many infants that were nursing up to this point weaned. By 2 weeks into the
pregnancy the taste of the milk had already changed. Many nurslings didn't
care. Others weaned because of the taste. Colostrum apparently doesn't seem
so tasty to some older children. Many moms who continued to breastfed
reported
symptoms such as mildly to very sore nipples, this is an internal soreness .
Nothing apparent on the skin itself.

Some found the pain of the sore nipples ,intolerable and weaned . Others
found it intermitent. Worse in the first trimister, milder in the middle.
Worse at the last of pregnancy.

There was also discussion of the antsy feeling, an inability to sit still and
a deep pulling by some in the back of the breast.
For some mothers these feelings are tolerable, for others unbearable. And the
same woman may have different expeiences with different pregnancys.
My own experiences with nursing during and through pregnancy vary greatly,
but still pretty much encompass all of the above.
I nursed through a multiple pregnancy carried to 37 weeks, had twins weighing
in at 5lbs,15ounces & 5lbs,5ounces.
This was almost 21 years ago. I would not recommend this to anyone. But I
learned a lot.
My twins were lazy nursers, and my 2 1/2 year old really helped keep things
going. They were both up above 13 pounds by three months. If you want more
details Email me directly.
In my experience counseling mothers, They need to know that prenancy will
have a serious impact on the milk supply and if they have a very young infant
that it will probably wean. I don't think enough information is often given
to women on this subject.
