Alicia- In case you changed your mind about no mail or returning
Sunday night (sorry it takes me so long to reply:long story): I
can only give you info on local practices (Beer Sheva's SOROKA
MEDICAL CENTER). Soroka has 10,000 births a year, sizable number
of deliveries are Bedouin women whom I doubt would have epidural.
According to a senior midwife, the epi rate at Soroka is about
15%, she doesn't know about the rest of Israel but thinks
probably higher elsewhere. (She may be a bit on the low side,
since I heard from another midwife that c/s is around 20-25%.)
If all is OK, d/c is at 36 hrs. According to 1st midwife, early
d/c due to lack of beds, not health fund pressures. As community
LC, I USED to feel that most problems I saw stemmed from lack of
basic knowledge or technique that moms should have received in-
hospital. However, Prof. Arthur Eidelman (director of neonatalogy
Shaarei Tzedek Hospital, Jerusalem) did a study (I'll try to get
reference for you later if you want it) and found that 1 day pp
was the period of lowest retention of information. Therefore,
even if someone qualified and with the time to pass on info to
moms in-hospital existed at Soroka, according to the Eidelman
study together with early d/c, it was in one ear out the other.
Best of luck with your testimony! Judy Knopf
