Dear Jodi,

This case sounds like this mom is having some parenting difficulties, not
nursing difficulties, though that's where the symptoms are. Sounds as though
she may be having problems saying "no" to her older child and/or redirecting
him into alternate activities, talking about taking turns, etc., telling him
"yes, you may nurse after the baby is done," or "yes, you may nurse together,
but you must hold still and be gentle, or you will have to play on the floor
till baby's done," whatever. And then sticking with it, screams or not. Is
he getting attention other than the nursing? Can she get help sometimes with
occupying her older one while she can nurse her younger one in peace?

She might get a lot out of the Faber and Mazlish books, and talking with her
LLL group moms about how they keep their older children happy while nursing
the younger ones. Using a baby sling might help her nurse the baby (and keep
him and her chest a bit "off limits") while using the other hand for helping
the older one draw, read a book, etc.

She will probably find that weaning and/or continuing to nurse her older one
will come a lot easier when she follows through with positive disciplining
skills. Not to mention enjoying her children a lot more.

Wishing her good luck and stamina,
Lisa Mo
