I have been volunteering with the Hurricane Floyd flood victims since it
happened in Sept. I have been soliciting household items, food etc for
distribution, helping with Government applications etc. I just got a request
from an International Relief Organization to see if I could help with geting
donations of "Infant food and milk" for an Hispanic Mission in an adjoining
county. Well, little did they know what they're going to get by contacting
me!!!!!!!!!! Next week, I'll just have to have a discussion with the mission
director about the use of ABM by migrant workers living in unclean housing,
with the dangers of unclean water, etc. These Hispanics are "crabpickers" in
the crab industry so think about how that delicious crab meat got into your
salad. Those poor ladies stand on their feet from day light to sunset,
picking out crab meat with a sharp crabpicker.
They also requested disposable diapers.
I guess I'll have to go down there and do some staff training at the mission
and direct them to the WIC program in that county which has pretty well
trained nutritionists ( I know, I trained them!). The problem is that the
Hispanics can't go the the WIC clinic because they don't get paid for taking
time off, and it is a 45 min drive one way to the clinic ( IF they have
transportation). Doing Bfing classes onsite at the mission or at the migrant
camp is a better idea. I think I just got myself another "volunteer" job!!!
