I am reminded of two quotes; you can lead a horse to water but you
can't make him drink and if you give a man a fish he can eat for a
day but if you teach him to fish he can eat for a lifetime. It seems
there are babies that are characterized by the first quote and
mothers/babies that are served best by the second quote. A little
simplistic I know :-)
I do find the majority of women that get pumps to exclusively
breastpump feed don't stick with it all that long. It's ALOT of
work. Certainly a labor of love but it's essentially double
feedings: one feeding is to pump and one is to actually feed it to
the baby. The moms think they can do it but get overwhelmed. Most
only need SUPPORT SUPPORT SUPPORT those first few weeks to help them
understand they may be able to do this without a pump, and then there
are others (though very few I think) that actually need a pump.
I'm sure there is no easy or right answer here. As the professional
helping the mother we are charged with helping her find the best
solution, whatever our expertise at that moment suggests, and
supporting her as best we can. Let's be caring/respectful to each
other we all have different professional styles.
