The uterus usually returns to pre-pregnant size at about 10 days to
two weeks postpartum (fundal height decreases by about 1cm per day
from the umbilicus).  Afterpains are usually only bothersome for
about 2-3 days, but it is certainly possible they would be felt as
long as the uterus continues to shrink.  Afterpains are stronger with
subsequent babies, but I'm not aware that they continue much longer
(although the uterus may take slightly longer to involute, due to
lack of muscle tone).  Some women feel uterine sensation during
letdown for as long as they nurse.
