If a very fussy baby being treated for reflux (no diagnostic work-up) does
not improve in respect to the infant's fussiness after two weeks on Alimentum
would it do any good to eliminate diary? This mother's pedi's nurse though
that if Alimentum is hypo not non allerginic, it is possible that the small
amounts of protein still present may have been enough to maintain the
fussiness, just like traces of dairy in breastmilk. Is this too much of a
stretch? Since Alimentum didn't make a difference, baby is back to breast
now but since infant is still fussy mom really wants to explore all ideas.
They have increased to Zantac, but no difference after 4 days. This baby is
a twin; other twin is peaceful. Both are thriving. When fussy baby nurses
he sounds very throaty, like he needs to clear his throat during the entire
feeding - it is not nasal congestion. This causes nipple pain because he is
not calm at the breast like his brother. No problem with MER. Because of
mother's life situation, she said eliminating dairy would be a great hardship
but will do it if there is a good chance it would help... I just didn't
know what to tell her...
I'm wondering if there are actually other problems going on here and am
encouraging her to see a pedi GI but the big question here is the wisdom of
trying to eliminate dairy of the Alimentum didn't change anything. Please
help....
