It is amazing though, that only breasts (in relation to breastfeeding)
are given permission by the medical community to not work and no one
becomes concerned. With every other body part and function, if someone woke
up and a system "stopped working" or failed to work "correctly" the medical
community would run tests, treat, etc. because this is not normal. Fact
being, the body is designed to work in specific ways with specific purposes-
if it isn't working, somethings wrong.
But daily, women seek medical advice for percieved or actual lactation
issues and are told that its just something they have to get over- kind of
an "ah well" approach- "sorry, you just don't make milk, make enough, etc. "
Please forgive my bluntness, but if this approach was reversed and a
sometimes upstanding segment of male anatomy failed to work, why- treatment
and drug companies would leap to find answers or cures!....hummm- shades of
Viagra! Of course it is more important for an 80 year old to have his
anatomy working properly than to support maternal abilities and self
confidence in the proper function of their breasts. Womens health continues
to take a back seat in health care in so many ways, including
physician/nursing education. Until the function of breasts and
breastfeeding are included in education /training with the same seriousness
of all other body parts and systems we will continue to fail to meet the
healthcare needs of our female population. Until healthcare workers can not
pass their boards without a comprehensive knowledge of lactogenesis and
supportive interventions on par with renal, cardiac, etc. the rest of us
will continue to feel like we're swimming upstream daily. And
mothers/infants will continue to pay the price for ignorance. Hey, it only
took how many years and negitive consequences for aseptic techniques to
catch on?
Have a good weekend all!
