Years ago when I was getting my masters we learned the Denver Developmental
Test and had to use it on some babies/children to see if we could do it.  I
got permission from a mom  to test her baby and the baby she watched.  One
was 3-4 mo old  and the other was 7 mo old, described as a "good" baby.
Well the good baby flunked the test.  Probably because he sat in a seat all
day long.  The Rx was for him to be on a blanket on the floor and out of the
seat!   He rapidly made up for lost time.  These 2 young mothers just didn't
get it!  I think the same sort of thing happens to babies who "love" their
swings.  Actually mom & dad love the swings because they don't have to
interact with the baby.  Just wind him up and go about whatever it was you
were doing.

I have a mom in my group now who pumps full time.  I said something to her
about how she practiced attachment parenting.  She asked what that was!  But
she so interacts with her baby, it's neat to watch.

I personally think this "baby at arm's length" is a symptom of not tight
attachment, for whatever reason (work, culture, etc) and eventually we reap
the problems that come from this sort of parenting, all these young people
with psych problems and anger etc.

and PS Marie, I bet that curly red hair did you a big favor!
