I agree with you.  I also find it demeaning.  The worst time ever was
when my husband was a post-doctoral fellow (PhD).  At a departmental
picnic Phil's boss, also a PhD, introduced us to his son: "X this is Dr.
Barnett and this is Sarah"  The kid was 12! I was married with a baby of
my own.
