Dear Heidi,
I wrote to the ACS and did get a response, basically telling me to check out
their web site www.acs.org. She then sited a couple research articles to
make the claim that not breastfeeding adds a small risk but that it is
probably the pregnancy and suppression of ovulation that gives the reduced
risks.
So I went to their site and spent time looking around. At the top they have
a type in word and search. When I typed in breastfeeding there were many
hits of research to support the protective factor. When I was just in their
site (and I tried to pretend I knew nothing about breastfeeding), the
material is buried deep into the literature and very minimally mentioned.
I wrote back to her with my observations and comments. I also sujested she
look further into the research on the benefits of breastfeeding and how it
helps to reduce the risk of both breast and ovarian cancer. I told this
woman from the ACS that young woman and woman still in their reproductive
years should be able to see this data and have it more visible.
Your review of literature made me think of another study that helps to
demonstrate the protective effect breastfeeding has on the breast. If anyone
out there knows this study please forward it to me, otherwise I will start my
lit review. This was a study in China where woman only breastfeed from one
side and there was a statistical increase in breast cancer found in the
breast that they weaned and never used.
Also has there ever been a study looking at woman how adopt and induce
lactation and their statistics related to breast cancer?

I will keep plugging away.
