I agree with Dr. Jack that lithium can be used during breastfeeding.
Personally, I have been acquainted with a mother whose child thrived
quite well with mom taking this medication while she was breastfeeding.
Please be sure that the mom
is well informed about side effects from medication and what signs to
watch for in the infant that may indicate toxicity (ie. EXTREME diarrhea,
vomiting, a change in infant's behavior).  The physician and pharmacist
should be able to give the info to mom, although she probably is very
knowledgable concerning side effects she may have experienced from
lithium in the past.  I would also suggest
that mom inform pediatrician she is taking this medication so that the
pediatrician is aware of the information (NOT so that the pediatrician
should tell her to stop breastfeeding).
