I am working on a longer post on this topic, but wanted to make a quick
comment on venting. The Starter SNS is meant to vent the same way that a
bottle does, by a small amount of air coming in around the ring. The
regular SNS, which has a different kind of bottle, and two tubes coming out
of the bottom of it (as worn for nursing), must vent through the opposite
tube, in order for the supplement to keep flowing to the baby. Some moms
purposely keep the other tube closed in order to slow the flow, by having a
vacuum form inside the bottle. However, in my experience, the baby will
soon learn that releasing his suction on the breast will allow the
supplement to start flowing again (by letting air rush into the bottle).
Babies often learn this by accident, when they are startled by a loud
gurgling noise, whenever they break suction on the breast. Also, when this
happens, and the breast with the tube is still in the baby's mouth, contents
of the mouth will be sucked into the bottle. This is one reason that I do
not recommend that anyone trying to nurse twins, or two unrelated adopted
babies, at the same time give each baby a tube from one SNS. Wearing two
Lact-Aids at the same time is not difficult, and prevents the babies sharing
saliva.

The Lact-Aid does not require a vent, because the container is a soft,
plastic bag, which just collapses as the supplement is taken from it. It
actually works like the Playtex nurser claims to. The Playtex nurser will
take in air through the nipple hole, whenever the bottle is upright and/or
the nipple is not filled with formula. However, no air will rush into the
Lact-aid bag through the feeding tube. This is one reason that the Lact-Aid
is easier to use in a variety of positions. It will continue to function in
any position, and can even be left on the breast after it is empty, without
the baby sucking air. Both of these features make it especially good for
moms who want to get their babies latched lying down in bed and go back to
sleep.

Aloha,
Darillyn
