I have a 34 yr. primip. Baby is 2 1/2 wks. old. I first saw them on day 3
and worked with correcting several problems, resulting in successful
nursing. Today I received a call from Dad (he seems more comfortable
calling than mom -- that's been the pattern all along). Obviously baby is
in a growth spurt and nursing frequently. He says baby cries in frustration
sometimes bc mom doesn't have any milk sometimes due to frequency of bf.
He says she doesn't seem to make the milk fast enough.
I gave all the usual suggestions inc. stay in bed w/baby, rest, drink to
thirst, use warm compresses and massage between and before nursing. We do
have a way of making a make-shift supplementer here, and I may try to get
that to them tomorrow. I also mentioned Metocolpramide -- mom isn't big on
meds, though.
But tonight Dad revealed an interesting piece of mom's history. In her
early 20's she had a pituitary problem which resulted in an excess
production of prolactin. It was treated (he wasn't sure how). So he is
wondering now if that could have any bearing on her milk production now.
Is it possible she isn't producing sufficient prolactin bc of that problem?
Her MER is funcitoning fine. Breasts do fill and soften..... just not
with the frequency that baby needs right now.
I did explain that growth spurts usually only last 5 - 7 days and then
things should become more normal.
I'd appreciate any insights anybody has on the pituitary situation and her
prolactin production.
Also, does anybody happen to know what Blessed Thistle is in Spanish???
Thanks in advance,
