Hi all...

I have a client who has a baby who is approximately one month old. Started
out with a baby with no latch, hypertonic, arching to beat the band,
screaming, and refused latch.  Baby is now breastfeeding, and latching, and
has good weight gain. Mother has had treatment from her practitioners with
Nystatin for thrush, and history of burning, which has subsided.

Tongue extends well over lower gums. No tongue tie. Baby developed the
tendency to suck in upper lip after latch, and has had a steady sucking
blister on upper lip. Mother has tried gentle pressure on lower lip, to
relieve pain, and sometimes baby gets off and there is a vertical crease,
slight, on nipple.

Latest is that mother says baby has been clicking BIG TIME, and I saw this
myself...baby clicks every few sucks, and this is intensely painful for
mother. Mother had tried everything to get baby not to suck in lips,
altering position, etc, and the clicking that is now so prevalent is driving
her nuts, to the point where it is so painful, and she wants to quit.

WHAT IS THIS CLICKING?

I suggested, in my ignorance  *have been trying lots of things..here* that
she insert her finger into the baby's mouth, and let her suck, and then
gently draw finger out, pushing down gently on tongue. I feel that this is a
tongue thing, and so does the mother, but what can we do about it? Mother
has large breasts, and baby's mouth is small.
