In a message dated 11/7/01 7:29:58 AM, [log in to unmask] writes:

<< In other words it had nothing to do with child led weaning!

The child was ready to wean and was supported in this by his dad. The

mother was portrayed as overbearing and strident and she insisted on BF the

6 yo in public! Unfortunately the message I got was that mom was using the

BF for her own security blanket, not in the best interests of the child.>>

No, it didn't, but the mother stood up and ranted about child-led weaning,
giving the clear implication that child-led weaning is a stupid fallacy
orchestrated by controlling mothers. She sounded like a fanatic blinded by an
ideal that has no place in the real world, compelled to see it through, no
matter who is damaged. Isn't that what people believe already?

<<I would have preferred a better illustration of "older" nursing, say a mom

who was genuine and loving, nursing a 2 yo and being told she couldn't.

That would be worthy of showing how our culture is warped. As it was, they

used cliche characters for shock value and thought that they were making a

valid statement. I actually agreed with Judge Amy's decree after listening

to the little boy :-) That part was very well done.>>

But, that is what is so disturbing. You write that the way the judge
interacted w/ the child was well done, but would such a child exist? Anyone
would have agreed w/the judge given the completely fictional scenario
presented. But the reason that scenario was presented is b/c it validates
cultural beliefs, not b/c it would ever happen. And why is our society any
more warped for opposing nursing a 2yr-old than a 6 yr-old?

Jennifer Tow, IBCLC, CT, USA (whose 3 yr old would love it if I could manage
a whole thermos full of milk for him everyday!--out of the breast, of course!)
