In Winnie's post about the case of her new granddaughter she issued a caveat
at the end. No one has commented on it so far, so I'm doing it now. We all
know that having children is not a given for any woman and that assuming
someone has children simply because they are old enough to have done so, is
inappropriate and asking about why they haven't is even more so. Why should
we be so clueless when it comes to our children's children?

Winnie wrote:
"One thing I would like people to be aware of. There is a tendency in our
field to assume as we get older and our children are grown that we will, of
course have grandchildren. Even before this, I was always feeling a little
weird when everyone would talk about their grandchildren and then wait
expectantly or ask me outright, "What about your grandchildren?" Please be
aware that not everyone our age who loves working with moms and babies and
has had children will also have grandchildren and the subject may be a
sensitive one."

I can't improve on Winnie's words, only second them, esp the final sentence.

who believes that every child is worthy of rejoicing over and being
cherished, and who believes equally strongly that personhood is not
contingent on parenthood
