Peggy, Can you clarify to the Lactnet group specifically how or what you
used as the sucrose pacifier?   Carla

We use 50% sucrose which the pharmacy prepares from sucrose USP/NF
(Spectrum Chemical So, Gardena, Calif). They package about 10 ml of the
solution in 15 ml glass sealable vials. These are then kept in the nursery
refrigerator. They are restocked every 1-2 weeks (cost: about $1.40). We
use red premature nipples with a 2x2 cm sterile gauze pad inside the
nipple. Some of the sucrose solution is poured on the gauze pad to moisten
it before putting the nipple in the baby's mouth. During the procedure,
sucrose can be added to the gauze. (We basically duplicated the procedure
that Blass used in his study.) It takes at least 2 minutes for sucrose to
be effective for pain control. It works by causing release of endogenous
endorphins.
