Kirsten writes about an ABM company who is enticing health workers to come
hear about the need for expensive DHA supplements for breastfeeding women by
offering the health workers (presumably non-DHA containing) food and drink.
Companies need to be creative to stay competitive. If they fear a loss of
sales revenue from the increase in breastfeeding, they need to find
something else to sell. Implying that human milk is inadequate unless the
mother is supplemented with their product doubly reinforces their position
in the market. They should be in line for a marketing prize for this
tactic.
Kirsten, please let us know which company this is. They do not deserve
anonymity on this list. Also, some hospitals have rules for what kinds of
gratuities employees are allowed to accept without reporting it, and what
kinds of goodies must be reported, to safeguard against employees being
biased in favor of certain products or companies. Your hospital ought to be
very interested in who attends these marketing events.
Personally I was astounded to learn that the DHA supplement being sold there
at two dollars per dose is about 12 times more expensive than the capsules
sold here in Norway, the most expensive place in the world, for people who
don't like the taste of cod liver oil. Daily dose of DHA if using capsules
is 300 mg. By taking the recommended amount of cod liver oil one gets 600
mg of DHA at half the cost of the capsules, or about 4 per cent of the cost
of the supplement being marketed by this ABM company. Maybe I should
organize a cod liver oil smuggling ring and quit my day job.
