Keitha, I have seen several varieties of nipples.  Some rather random -- The
key seems to be how much tissue there is and how big the baby's mouth is.  I
usually aim to get as much of the nipple tissue into the baby's mouth as is
possible.  It may take some experimentation to find the most comfortable
position.  The least success has been when the tissue was so random/ spread
over such a large area that it was not possible to centre the 'nipple' and
have the baby take the majority in his/her mouth.  These have the most pain
as well.  Usually the infant has not minded the variation.  I have not seen
a reduction in milk supply, all of the moms I have seen had several pores.
These are babies I REALLY hope have nice large mouths, so lots of breast
tissue can be encompassed and the nipple tissue -- irregardless of shape --
is well back in the mouth.
