Interesting article on front page of Infectious Diseases in Children
Vol.13, No.8, Aug 2000. "Two-thirds drop in GBS cases impressive, but more
needed." CDC reports 6,100 cases in 1993 to 2,200 cases in 1998. CDC &
AAP recommended in 1996 that each hosp adopt a policy. Also regardless of
policy, if woman had previously had a baby with early onset GBS or who
developed GBS bacteriurea during pg, woman should be tx intrapartum.

Our hospital simply adopted the flow chart from the 1997 Red Book (AAP).
Made life simpler if on nursery call :-) The important point is screening
and assessing risk factors during labor. However the CDC also said of 273
cases of GBS studied, 41 % of the 273 cases had no risk factors or
screening. and 21% of 273 cases occurred in spite of intrapartum
antibiotics.

Also a popular woman's mag recently had an article about the mom who
prompted the campaign to adopt a GBS policy after her baby died in mid-90's
from GBS. Great reading to remind us what one person can accomplish. So
although I hate the antibiotics intrapartum (thrush set-up), I must say
that saving all these babies and all the associated grief is worth it.
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
