Barbara -- write a letter to the PUBLISHER of the book, with a copy to the
author, very polite, very professional, very cordial. Say good things
about the book -- why it is useful, why you were reading it, and say that
in general you thought it was well done and the LCs need to know more about
this topic. Then, gently point out that some of the bf information is
incorrect/inaccurate/misleading and suggest that when they do a future
edition, they might like to enlist the aid of an IBCLC to help write this
section, or provide input, or be a reviewer. The publisher would like to
sell more books, and wants their books to be well-received and to be
accurate, so that they will get good reviews and sell more. The author may
have her feathers ruffled a tiny bit, but she'll get over it. I have
contributed pages and pages of corrections to textbooks that I thought were
generally good and wanted to keep using. And those corrections have been
incorporated into future editions (and I've been thanked in the
acknowledgements!). In one case, I was even made an official reviewer of
the next edition. So, polish off those diplomatic skills and write a
letter. Give some specific examples of places where the information is out
of date, and provide more up to date references, and examples of where
things are poorly worded and then an example of how it could be re-written
to be better.
