Alicia: I just LOVE to see people with "MD" after their names say what you
just said. It is a rare physician that seems to realize that very little
of what it practiced today has actually been scientifically demonstrated.
As one of my lives is as a health services researcher and policy analyst
(by PhD), I'm somewhat of a fanatic about "calling" docs on this.
According to several studies by the RAND Corp. of Santa Monica, only 20% of
what is practiced today by physicians has been "proven" as effectice in
clinical trials. Worse yet, the GAO (General Accounting Office) just
recently released a report saying that the figure was closer to only
15%!!!!!!

Oh...and for those of you who came up to me in shock (at my age) at the
conference...yes, I am 34 years old. I worked full-time in various aspects
of health care the whole time through school (except when my oldest was
born two years before I finished my dissertation) and was legally
emancipated at 16. Believe it or not, my kids have taught me how to relax
and play (and I've been working from home since my second was born two
years ago). : ) But, thanks for the compliment!
