Several years ago I did an inservice for some medical students. I drew a sideview profile on the blackboard of a mother holding a nursing baby. I asked then for a volunteer who knew anatomy to come to the board. One young ambitious student jumped up, and I asked him to diagram how a medication taken orally by the mother would enter the milk, and the baby's body. He was totally stumped. I then asked for another volunteer, and another. It was a great introduction as I told them many times doctors will tell mothers not to take this medication, or not to eat this food because of it being dangerous or intolerant without really understanding the physiology of milk production and breastfeeding. I asked them how they will be able to describe the merchanism and how to counsel breastfeeding mothers/babies when they are in practice. I went on with the class and had a very attentive audience after I pointed out what they didn't know!
