This is actually good research. It is on hypothermia for babies with
birth asphyxia - a severe lack of oxygen during the birth that often
leads to brain damage. It has been noted for years that young children
who drown in cold water are less likely to have brain damage when
revived, even after significant amounts of time without breathing. This
is an attempt to reduce the brain's need for oxygen while it is healing,
and the latest and largest study so far has shown a reduction in brain
injury in children who were treated this way vs. children who received
normal care. Absolutely no one is advocating this type of care for
healthy newborns.
