My mother was a dressmaker in Pittsburgh while I was growing up. Her
best client was the wife of a prominent physician. While this woman
was pregnant her physician husband requested she quit smoking.

Still, she gained only enough weight with her first daughter so that
after delivery she could almost immediately fit into her size 8
wardrobe.
Her husband requested her to breastfeed for a short duration and she
complied--but for no longer than the negotiated length of time.

The first child was diagnosed with a vision problem so severe that
in her first year she already wore very thick glasses. They found out
she couldn't see due to potty training difficulties. She just sqatted
at the livingroom coffee table and strained. They figured out that this
little girl couldn't see well enough to find the bathroom door.

This mother had guilt due to her dieting during the pregnancy and only
gaining 15#. She ate more with No.2 and gained 25# and breastfed
longer. She told my mother she really felt like breastfeeding longer,
but via guilt didn't wish to give her second child what the first did
not
receive. Interesting, huh. She wished to be equal with them both.

I don't see any thing wrong with guilt if it changes a behavior that is
incorrect.

PS: I am about ten years older than her daughterss as I sometimes
babysat them when I was 12 to 14. My mother telling me these facts
made a great impression on me to remember them.
