I have been astonished at the warm, cuddly reception this is getting on
lactnet! Yes, I know that it is now without alcohol (many mothers and
children were addicted to the older formulation in the middle of the 20th
century, here in England), but, can I remind people that use of something
like this for a breastfed baby means that exclusive breastfeeding is
breached? Of course, women challenge the mucosal surfaces of their infants
with all manner of things, but surely, surely it is only responsible to
mention that this is one aspect of using this handy lil' product?

One of the astonishing aspects of my own recent qualitative research work,
where I interviewed some breastfeeeding women over the first 6 months of
their babies' lives, was how many women who were otherwise giving nothing
but breast milk (and maybe even nothing but breastfeeding) used some kind of
colic product -- usually transiently. It really made me think about this.

In commercial terms, if you cannot sell them formula, try and sell them
bottles, breast milk bags and pumps. If you can't seel them those, at least
go for breast pads, special shirts that emphasise modesty-gone-mad, or, at a
last resort, colic products. Maybe they have a place, but I remain to be
convinced that they are being marketed ethically or always used
appropriately.

sceptically yours,
