Hi All,
I have to agree with Pat that the initials CLC can be very frstrating.
There is nothing wrong with someone being called a CLC, as long as they make
sure that people know she is a COUNSELOR and NOT a CONSULTANT. Where it
becomes unethical, imho, is when a CLC (or anyone else for that matter)
calls themselves a LACTATION CONSULTANT and they are not an IBCLC. THere
is a big difference between a counselor and a cinsultant, in my book, and it
is up to us, as professionals and a profession, to distinguish that. We can
have all the initials after our names that we want, but unless we ensure
that the general public is able to know the difference in some way, they are
meaningless.
An idea for our IBCLC's; tell people you are an IBCLC, not an LC. Stress
the "IBC" part and folks will ask "What does the IBCLC stand for?" When you
tell them "Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant" they will
be impressed. How many HCP-type professions are internationally recognized?
Not many, I'll bet. But when an IBCLC in America talks to an IBCLC in
Africa, they both know that they both have passed the same test, and are on
a similar wavelength when it comes to BF information.
My .02...

Warmly,
Jay
