Dear colleagues,
I am well aware that long-term breastfeeding should normally NOT be
a problem as regards osteoporosis in old age. We know that the bone loss
of pregnancy/lactation is restored after weaning, even where a pregnancy
has occurred while the existing child is breastfeeding. An Australian
study indicates that breastfeeding may be protective against hip
fracture in elderly women, and that it is dose related (more BF is
better).

[Cumming RG, Klineberg RJ. Breastfeeding and other reproductive factros
and the risk of hip fractures in elderly wlomen. Int J Epidemiol 1993;
22:684-691.]

However, I have a query raised by a colleague about one narrow window
of time on which we seem to have no solid information. That is, the
mother who has a *pre-menopausal pregnancy* and passes through menopause
during or immediately after breastfeeding. With many more women now
leaving childbearing till the end of their reproductive years, this
issue is one about which we are sure to be asked from time to time.
Does anyone have information on any study, or even a case history, of
bone status in an older mother who has had menopause DIRECTLY FOLLOWING
weaning? Does the onset of menopause prevent the usual post-lactational
bone restoration, or does post-lactational bone restoration override the
effect of menopause in this situation? I don't know.
I'm going currently *NO MAIL*, and am going to be away after Monday
(that's Sunday, USA time). So please would anyone with information
email me privately.
   Cheers,
