Anne, Try emphasizing meticulous handwashing, especially before handling pump parts. We also use purell in our NICU. Also, if the mothers are sharing a common pump or two in the NICU, someone in the unit needs to be responsible for washing the pump down between mothers. In our unit, each mother is responsible for wiping down the breastpump with a antibacterial wipe provided by the hospital. Also, maybe infection control needs to come up and watch handwashing practices. Who mixes additives into the breastmilk?? Maybe their handwashing practices need to be monitored. Good luck!!
