<<Yes, why bother? Why SHOULD I spend time and money getting a degree from
UIU in this field?
Someone please tell me what value that'll have if I can't even use it.

Kim Lenderts>>

Yes Kim-I wonder that too. I just received my degree from UIU in MCH:LC,
after spending the better part of the last 5 years pursuing this degree
(while also raising my babies) on my husband's military paycheck. I
fortunately had my own GI bill to pay for it (but it used all of the
$40,000). I also paid for the many conferences (LLLI/ILCA) to receive my
CERPs and the exam out of my pocket-only to find out that that beautiful
certificate that came in my mailbox earlier this week is basically useless.
I can do as much as a LLLLeader (which I am also) as I can now with IBCLC
initials after my name.

I am NOT an RN and do not want to be one, nor do I now have the funds to
pursue that avenue even if I wished too. I am disappointed, discouraged and
frankly astonished that what I have worked so hard for these past 10 years
is thrown to the wind as I cannot give mothers the evidence based
information they need to make informed choices regarding their breastfeeding
problems without contradicting the HCP, offering any type of alternative
therapy (and what exactly constitutes alternative anyway?), and so on...

Please don't take this the wrong way, I am not griping about spending the
time and money as though that is all that I am worried about-it is gone and
done...I came into this field because I wanted to help mothers and babies be
successful at breastfeeding, because I have an overriding passion for the
art and science of breastfeeding. However it is slowly being eroded away by
the constraints and 'gagging' that will not allow me to practice this
profession in the manner that can most help those mothers and babies be
successful at breastfeeding. Someone please tell me that that certificate
(and diploma) on my wall do mean something and that this profession I so
much wanted to be a part of IS worth my while...
