safemedications.com is a consumer website sponsored by the American Society
of Health-Systems Pharmacists which is not breastfeeding friendly. Here is
the letter I sent and their reponse. I hope more Lactnetters will have
time to write to create the power of many.

Dear Ms. Balado,

I recently reviewed your consumer web site to evaluate whether we would
recommend this site to Maine WIC families. After inputting several
medications, I was disappointed. Even if I searched a medication that is
on
the AAP list for medications approved for breastfeeding mothers, such as
loratadine the information provided is the same as for a medication of high
risk such as loxapine.

If your desire is to educate people on the safe use of medications, part of
your professional responsibility would be the use of respected resources
such as the AAP list of medications approved for breastfeeding and Thomas
W.
Hale, PhD reference Medications and Mothers' Milk. Hale is an Associate
Professor of Pharmacology and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Texas
Tech University School of Medicine in Amarillo, Texas.

By ignoring this information on your web site your organization may
undermine women's confidence that they can breastfeed in most situations.
I
hope in future updates to your web site that you will consider providing
breastfeeding women more accurate information and distinguish between
medications of low risk and high risk during breastfeeding.

Sincerely,
Gail Lombardi, MS, RD, CLC

Dear Ms. Lombardi,

Thank you for your thoughtful comments regarding ASHP's consumer website.
I've shared the comments with some of my colleagues in order for your
points to be considered in any content alterations planned for the site.
