I'm posting this for an IBCLC colleague of mine who is not on lactnet. She
needs to know if anyone can tell her where to find written evidence for
using a Haberman feeder for a premie baby with a weak suck. Her brother and
his wife had a 33 weeker last week. They need the baby to gain weight so
that the baby can be released from the NICU. When my colleague went to visit
her new niece she took them a Haberman feeder as her brother had told her
that the baby was not sucking well at the breast. We have routinely used the
Haberman for babies with a weak suck. However, the LC's at this
neighboring hospital(50 miles away) were only familar with using the
Haberman for cleft palate babies and they refused to let the parents use it
to feed their baby. They even had the neonatoligist write an order forbiding
its use for their baby. They want to use a premie nipple shield (which is
too small for the moms nipple) and then gavage feed. My friend is looking
for documentaion to take them to show that the Haberman can be an effective
option. We were trained to use it by a speech pathologist, but she is out
of town. Anyone know of any good evidence based articles about the Haberman
for suck training ?
