Patricia: You're absolutely right. When a person with an ulcer is found
to be infected by Helicobacter Pylori, the ulcer can be cured by a
regimen of antibiotics combined with H-2 blocker or proton-pump blocker.
The infection can be detected by a biopsy of the stomach or by a blood
test for antibodies (but the antibodies can remain positive, so the blood
test is not good for checking if someone is cured of the bug). The
reason I didn't mention this in this case is that H-2 blockers work very
well at healing ulcers and I just wanted to make a point about these
medications without throwing in new therapies. Unfortunately, the most
successful antibiotic regimen for H. pylori includes flagyl (metronidazole),
which is somewhat contraindicated in breastfeeding anyway. The regimen
which is not quite as effective includes biaxin (clarithromycin) and
prilosec, which is the drug in question in the first place. Let me know
if you want any more details on this. I've kind of run on here. Alicia.
