Did anyone see the article in the NY Times yesterday, re: nursing shortages
in the US, and working conditions for nurses? I read it and thought to
myself "yes, this is the kind of situation that impacts not only the
nurses themselves, but also their the ability of nurses to provide
professional and accurate care to breastfeeding mothers after birth." Many
nurses are often overworked to an unsafe level, and also underpaid for the
level of responsibility involved.

Not to start a debate on this subject, since it involves breastfeeding only
to the extent that nurses often do not have the time to give professional
care due to workload, but I do think that it is time to shift some of the
funds that are now being funnelled to high paid executives in the managed
care and hospital systems to the people/professional (largely WOMEN) who
actually do the WORK of taking care of moms and babies in the hospital.

Off my soapbox. Kathleen
