The amount of sucking time at the breast that prevents ovulation is
going to vary from women to women. We are all individuals. The same
thing with the issue of what it takes to be successful at BF and
working.

I have worked with BF moms who have gotten pregnant when the baby was 5
months old, and with moms who were trying to conceive when their child
was 3 years old, but didn't ovulate if the child increased BF due to
sickness, etc. Published information on number of BF's in 24 hours or
number of minutes of sucking time at the breast to inhibit ovulation are
averages. Remember the bell curve...some will always fall at other
points on the spectrum.

As for BF and working, we all know of the wide variation in milk
production, ability to express, temperament of moms and babies, physical
and psychological stamina of individuals, etc. I used to compare myself
to a friend from down the street who BF her child, volunteered at
school, lead the Girl Scout troop, did sewing and craft projects, baked
homemade goodies, sometimes worked as a substitute teacher, etc. I
needed a nap every afternoon...

Now I know that I am OK with my energy level and abilities. I need to
pace myself to respect my limitations and remain healthy. Don't get the
wrong idea, I am not a sickly person. I am very active and involved
with family, work, volunteering, etc. But none of us can judge another
or ourselves by what someone else is capable of doing.
